Below is the site that i use to learn about infrared .  All I did was to scale them down for hand held units although having one or two of the larger ones works out really well for some shoots.

We did a hack on a Radio shack radio to make our own franks box....well some call it a spirit box...ghost box...franks box...p-sb7.

Hi George.  We (my group - 417PRG) found that it was expensive to make an IR light and to buy one too.  I have learned from a fellow investigator on a cheaper way of doing it.  We have been using the cheap way on our last 3 investigations and it is now a part of our equipment.  Go to walmart buy one of those $5 clip on lamps (I think they are in the hardware section). In the lighting section buy either a regular black light party bulb or a energy efficient squiggly bulb ($2-$8 depending on the bulb you get).  Viola...instant,cheap, and awesome IR light. We have a radio from Radio Shack and hacked it for a franks box. As far as other equipment, we are currently working on it.

Angel,  

I actually know the owner of a group up there in Independence.  I do not know if he allows tag a longs though. I can ask him if you want.
