Place: Irving, Texas - September, 2002.
My husband is 4th generation Texan. He's a big guy at 6'3", about 225 - he believes in hard work, didn't give to the homeless (he'd drive me crazy with his "get a job" mantra, but I'm proud to say he's changed his ways). He's stubborn, and practical and believes in dirt, tractors, bulls, black labs, and the 2nd amendment. He's a good man, not prone to believe in such 'silly' things as ghosts, but that was about to change...
One evening my daughter Tiff brought me a tortured kitten she'd rescued, and I doctored the little guy for hours. I made him a little nest in a big wicker chair by our bed, but not too long after we'd turned in for the night, that kitten eased himself to the bed, where he settled down against my husband's arm. Despite some grumbling, he allowed the kitten to stay - a teddy bear of a man, but I'll never tell. Anyway, that kitten survived, and a legend was born.
Roger Kitty was a carmel Manx - feral, fierce, and strong. He became known far and wide as "the King of Cats."
During one of his excursions out, he'd tangled with a raccoon, and contracted a respiratory infection. He almost died, but came through it with meds, and rest.
We'd noticed he kept looking across the room to a certain spot, but there wasn't anything around. When he got well enough to go out, he'd often act as if someone was following him, he'd look back then scurry away.
One afternoon, hubby was upstairs, and I heard him call me from the top of the stairs "hey what's up with that black cat, it just ran around my legs, and I almost fell over!!" He thought we'd got another cat, and didn't mention it to him ;)
The cat had come out of nowhere, caught him at the top of the stairs, and had run around his legs, at the ankles. He was so startled, he'd almost pitched right down the stairs!
When I informed him that we didn't HAVE a little black cat, he got quite freaked out. He saw it a time or two, but Roger always seemed to 'protect' us from it, and we observed him playing with it too.
Since that time, we've had numerous experiences with the supernatural - or the unnatural. He's definatley a believer now~
